I also read the Sports Illustrated cover story on the latest young phenom, in 16 year old Bryce Harper. It is a tough call/decision to try and figure out how much publicity and hype is too much, and is it all way too soon? While there is not a lot parents can do to completely stop a media outlet from writing articles, on the latest phenom prospect, I do feel that giving the OK to have my 16 year old appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated claiming him the next can't miss kid, IS going way too far. There is enough pressure involved already in simply trying to grow up, let alone become a professional athlete. Obviously the age here is the big story. However every year there are dozens of 16 year old Latin American kids who sign pro contracts with Major League clubs and nobody thinks twice about it. Yet here is a 16 year old American kid, whose parents are going a very much unconventional route with their son, and many eyebrows and voices are immediately raised. I DO think it is way too much too soon, but parents will never find the media as an ally when going down the road the road of limiting the hype. But in this case it doesn't seem as though the parents are exactly turning the media and the hype away, but rather welcoming it.
